5 Hacks to Save Electricity While Running Your Window AC

1. Use the 'Eco' or 'Energy Saver' Mode

Most modern units have an 'Eco' mode. Unlike the standard 'Cool' setting which leaves the fan running constantly, Eco mode turns off the fan once the desired temperature is reached. The fan will periodically cycle on to test the air temp and turn the compressor back on if needed. This can save up to 30% on energy costs.

2. Seal the Gaps

A window AC cannot cool a room if the cold air is escaping outside and hot air is leaking in. Make sure the accordion side panels are fully extended and sealed. Pro Tip: Buy weatherstripping foam and seal the gap between the upper and lower window sashes to completely insulate the room.

3. Keep the Filter Clean

We say it constantly because it's true: a dirty filter forces the compressor to work twice as hard to push air through. Clean your filter every 3 to 4 weeks during peak summer usage. It's free and significantly lowers energy consumption.

4. Utilize Curtains and Shades

Window ACs have to fight against pure solar heat. If your room gets direct sunlight, close the blinds or install blackout curtains during the hottest parts of the day. This reduces the heat load on the room, allowing the AC to cycle off sooner.

5. Don't Over-Cool

Setting the thermostat to 60°F will not cool the room faster than setting it to 72°F. It just forces the compressor to run non-stop. Find a comfortable temperature (usually around 72-74°F) and let the unit maintain it.
