Should I Repair or Replace My Window AC?

Should I Repair or Replace My Window AC?

The 50% Rule

A standard rule of thumb in the HVAC industry is the 50% rule: If the cost of the repair is more than half the cost of buying a brand new unit, you should probably replace it. For example, if a new unit costs $400, and the repair quote is $250, buying a new, more efficient model is usually the better investment.

Age of the Unit

Window AC units generally last between 8 and 10 years. If your unit is less than 5 years old, it is almost always worth repairing. If it's over 10 years old, its components are nearing the end of their lifespan, and replacement makes the most sense.

Energy Efficiency

Older units are significantly less energy-efficient. A unit built 10 years ago might cost you $20 - $30 more per month in electricity during the summer compared to a modern Energy Star unit. Even if a repair is cheap, replacing it might pay for itself in lower utility bills over a few summers.

Common Affordable Repairs

Some repairs are so affordable they are always worth doing, regardless of the unit's age. These include replacing a blown capacitor, swapping a faulty thermostat sensor, or doing a deep clean and unblocking the drain pan. These issues cost very little but restore the unit to 100% capacity.
