The Ultimate DIY Window AC Maintenance Checklist
April 15, 2026 By HVAC Pros

Why Maintenance Matters
A well-maintained window AC cools faster, uses less electricity, and lasts years longer than a neglected unit. Before the summer heat fully sets in, take 30 minutes to perform this basic maintenance routine.
The Spring Checklist
- Clean the Air Filter: Remove the front grill and pull out the mesh filter. Wash it with mild soap and warm water. Let it dry completely before reinstalling.
- Straighten the Fins: Inspect the aluminum fins on the back (outside) of the unit. If they are bent, they restrict airflow. Use a 'fin comb' to gently straighten them out.
- Clean the Coils: Dust and pollen stick to the condenser coils. Use a soft brush attachment on your vacuum to clean the front coils, and gently brush the rear coils.
- Clear the Drain Hole: Make sure the drain hole at the rear base of the unit is completely clear of debris so water can safely drip outside.
- Inspect the Cord: Window units draw massive amounts of power. Check the power cord for any fraying, cracks, or loose prongs. Never use an extension cord with a window AC.
When to Call a Pro
If you've done all the steps above and the unit still sounds loud, vibrates excessively, or doesn't blow ice-cold air, it's time to call in a technician to check the refrigerant levels and internal compressor.
