Why Is My Window AC Blowing Warm Air? 5 Common Causes

1. Dirty Air Filter

The most common and easily fixable cause of a window AC blowing warm air is a clogged air filter. When the filter is dirty, airflow is restricted, causing the internal evaporator coils to freeze over. Fix: Remove the front panel, take out the filter, and wash it with warm water. Let it dry completely before reinstalling.

2. Frozen Evaporator Coils

If your unit has been running non-stop on a very humid day, or if the filter is dirty, the coils inside can freeze into a block of solid ice. This blocks airflow entirely. Fix: Turn the unit off or run it on 'Fan Only' mode for a few hours to thaw the ice.

3. Leaking Refrigerant

Window AC units operate on a sealed refrigerant system. If there's a tiny crack or leak, the unit will slowly lose its ability to absorb heat. Fix: You will notice a steady decline in cooling power. This requires a professional technician to seal the leak and recharge the system.

4. Faulty Compressor or Capacitor

The compressor is the 'heart' of the AC. If the compressor fails, or if its starting capacitor burns out, the fans will run but the air won't be cooled. Fix: A clicking sound usually indicates a bad capacitor, which is an affordable repair. A dead compressor often means it's time to replace the unit.

5. Obstructed Condenser Coils

The back of the AC unit hanging outside needs to exhaust hot air. If it's covered in dirt, leaves, or blocked by bushes, it can't release heat properly. Fix: Gently clean the exterior coils with a soft brush or compressed air.
